English 原文
Blue water already covered half the third glass when Lyle held the tilted jug above it, droplets quivering at the lip. A bright shaft of light crossed the table and turned the liquid into a glowing pane. It threw a sharp silhouette of his hand across the towel beneath the glass row. Two other glasses, one scarlet and one sunny, stood further back in orderly shadow-edge along the towel. Each cradled a firm celery stalk whose pale ribs caught fleeting flecks of coloured glare. A faint perfume of jasmine drifted from a small pot near the window, bought during a greenhouse visit last weekend. That fragrance joined the steady peppery scent already rising from the fresh celery on the cloth. Lyle carefully tended the row, easing the heavy jug back to an even position beside his elbow. A final splash escaped, ran over the rim, and spilled down the outer wall of the blue glass. The thin ribbon slid across the towel, leaving a widening dim streak in the fabric’s weave. Light glanced off the wet fibres, hinting at a rumor of underground movement as the damp stain crept toward the table’s edge.
Steady gravity firmly grasped the soaked cloth and pulled its front hem downward across the glare-bright wood. The wet fabric drooped beyond the edge, guiding the dyed trickle like a silent conductor. The stream met the scarlet stain shaping itself nearby and blended until the colour deepened into violet. Moments later it dripped onto the magnifying glass resting in half-shadow below the glass row. The sudden splash nudged the lens and sent the round glass rolling across a strip of shadowed wood. It bumped the red water glass; faint waves flashed, bending the back-lit celery leaves like soft flags. Lyle quickly slid the cutting board from the cool sink area beside him on the left. He wedged it beneath the towel, raising the drooping edge so the coloured runoff arched back toward the centre. Leaning very close, he slowly peered through the freshly wiped lens beneath the glare above. Darker bands appeared inside one celery stalk where richer dye had already climbed above the paler layer. His fingers still pinched the towel’s corner as a thin violet thread kept rising inside the striped stalk.
