English 原文
Most stepping stones still held the warmth of daylight, but the jar in Harriet's damp fingers felt cool and slick. She had lifted it from the porch step where a bitter sweet tang clung to the rim from yesterday’s lemonade. The dew-softened metal lid spun too quickly, then jammed, and the delay let the nearest firefly drift away. Warm stone under one foot and slippery grass under the other confused her balance, and the glass wobbled in a short arc. The damp metal became her first obstacle, shining under the porch light but refusing the grip she needed. She paused, squinting at the erratic glow beyond the flower-bed edge, yet her timing came late again.
She eased away from the porch step and crossed the lawn centre, shoulders brushing the heavy jasmine air. Near the garden-hose coil, she lifted the cool rubber and shook a slug free. The glossy creature slid across a shallow puddle and vanished into darker grass. A small sprinkler key had been left on a warm stone beside the path. She fitted it, giving a firm half-turn until the hidden valve clenched shut. To emphasize the new silence, she tapped the metal once with a knuckle, the sound dull against her skin. Dew thickened while she worked, soaking through the threads of her rolled-up jeans. Returning along the stepping-stone path, she outlined a wide gesture over the mulch. She guided an invisible parade of glowing specks she imagined forming a tiny wonderland among the stems. Each soft footfall alternated between gritty stone and slick leaves, and her hands tingled from cold water lingering on the hose.
A sudden, hollow thump sounded against the warm porch wood behind her. The jar had tipped from the porch step when a frog landed nearby and nudged it forward. The glass rolled until it touched her ankle, so she stooped and scooped it up. The lid had been loosened earlier by condensation, so it turned smoothly with only a slight scrape. She waited through two green pulses from the calm insect hovering above the grass. On the third, she raised the jar and captured the glow with one unhurried gesture. If the rhythm shifted again, she would simply wait longer, letting her fingers remain still. A faint jasmine scent lingered in the mild air after everything else fell quiet.
