A coil of pale ribbon, three flat cardboard boxes, and a small sparrow perched on the stainless-steel counter formed an uneven row beneath the pass-through light. The bird shifted its dry claws on the smooth metal and began to forage for stray crumbs that had tumbled from the nearby sample plate, while warm air puffed upward through the floor vent and stirred the light feathers along its back.

Ruby stepped to the packaging station once the queue inched forward; her grandparent still read the opening-hours sign by the door. She had already chosen a pastry, and the staff slid it toward her in a shallow vessel of thin card. Keen to dress the gift, Ruby added a foil trophy-shaped chocolate beside the glossy bun, then folded in two surplus napkins for padding. The lid bulged. A perseverant twist of her fingers pulled a long ribbon strip around the box, yet the extra thickness left rough edges prying apart. Determined, she fed a second, wider strip over the first and fastened a sticker, but the cardboard corners sprang open again, exposing the sweet filling to the humid air.

The box wobbled in her palm; Ruby pinched the side and tugged out the middle ribbon loop with one sharp pull. The sudden slack let the lid lie flat, and the single remaining bow drew tight against the cool surface without protest. At that moment the sparrow hopped closer, its head tilting toward the discarded ribbon strand now dangling over the counter edge. Ruby nudged the strip forward. The tiny beak seized the fiber, and wings beat in a quick blur. Outside, the sparrow fluttered past the chilled-drink cooler and vanished behind the bench, the bright ribbon trailing like a thin banner in the afternoon air.
