The Flake That Found the Hollow-

English 原文
Reese pressed a fresh snowball between her mittens, and the squeal under her palms felt springy, almost like a moss bed hidden inside the bright crust. She aimed to lift the ball onto the half-built lantern resting on the flat stone shaping board. A shaft of light slid across the dome, drawing a sharp shadow-edge that showed where each earlier layer had slumped. The path beside her had been cleared by her father; his shovel strokes, quick and rhythmic, left thin lines that glared like a miniature harvester’s trail. Reese placed the snowball, but warmth from her gloves spread through the white shell, thinning the curve. A transparent patch formed, back-lit by the afternoon sun, and a damp trickle shone down the inner wall. If the next layer slips, the hollow will gape, she thought, so she scooped powder from deeper snow along the cedar fence, where a toy yacht, tilted and half buried, threw a small reflected-gleam onto the powdery mound.
Minutes later the trickle cooled and froze, leaving a brittle glaze; when Reese added a second deep-snow ball, the fragile plate cracked with a dull crunch and the new piece slid toward the opening like a kettle lid losing its seat. She adjusted, pressing this ball longer, turning her wrists so genuine pressure reached every side. The contact hissed; crystals interlocked and the glow along the top ridge grew steadier. Yet another hairline fracture appeared, thinner than a thread. To stop further spreading, she shuffled to the garden tap, let a drip of icy water roll into her cupped mitten, and brushed that ribbon over the fracture. The smear darkened, then fixed as a dim seam of clear ice, halting the slide. She stepped back to viewing distance just as a late ray haloed the dome. A stray flake, loosened by the light breeze, spiralled through the opening and drifted toward the pooled-darkness at the base, twirling in slow, silver motion.
