A single drip from the gutter tapped the flagstone, then slid toward a shallow puddle shimmering at the centre of the courtyard. Zara knelt on a warm slab near the evaporation rim, keen to sketch the branching mineral patterns before they vanished. She had placed a small brass thimble on the stone as a marker, hoping to track how far the water retreated. Max arrived with a sketchbook, and their joint effort began: he would measure, she would draw. The surface, however, resisted their plan. Each time Zara leaned close, her head blocked the sun, the resinous smell from a sun-cured pine bench drifted past, and the cooled shadow paused the crawl of the luminous rim. When the pair stepped back, the meniscus brightened again, but the pause left a smudge in the forming pattern; uncertainty crept into every line they tried to capture.

Max suggested a minor change. Instead of crouching directly above the rim, he angled a pocket mirror to bounce sunlight onto the spot, leaving their hands free. The leaf that had been trapped under the glassy water was now half exposed; its outline had been sharpened by the added light, while ripples born from the earlier drip still quivered around the thimble. Yet their own movement caused the mirror’s patch of brightness to wander, and the same slowdown repeated, only at a different edge. They adjusted again, tilting the mirror a finger’s breadth higher; this variation held the beam steady long enough for Zara to finish a quick line. The puddle shrank further, but an unexpected breeze rattled the branch above, shifting the shadow line across the surface and mixing fresh reflections with half-drawn shapes. They paused, tools quiet, while a mild scent of sun-warmed stone lingered in the courtyard.

A minute later, a pedestrian wandered through the courtyard and stepped on the dried pattern zone before either teen could warn him. The boot print smeared the delicate branches, pushing sediment back toward the shrinking puddle. Zara and Max exchanged a quick shrug and filled the remaining space on the page with loose dots, capturing at least the changed outline. They packed their things as the sun curved lower. Somewhere beyond the wall, a bicycle tyre hissed on the drying pavement.
