English 原文
Only five sheets of light-blue tissue stayed on Mae’s side of the supply table, each thinner and more frayed than the one beneath it. They lay corner-to-corner in a slanted row, their zig-zag edges echoing the blue paper roses already pinned along the float’s frame. Paste clung to her fingers like half-dried honey while she lifted a sheet; its surface felt cool, almost slick. When she pressed it against the chicken wire, the loose panel began to oscillate, and a grey cat on the concrete below tracked the tiny motion with slow, blinking eyes. A breeze slid through the rolled-up door and made the unfinished petals undulate as if shallow water rippled under them. The cat’s whiskers twitched. Mae had heard her mother’s insightful advice earlier that morning—check colour changes in natural light—but she kept working beside the supply table, trusting the shed bulbs for now.
A darker patch appeared once the strip dried; under the doorway’s daylight the difference stood out, so Mae finally carried the remaining sheets forward. Max, stapling gold tissue on the opposite side, paused to acknowledge the issue with a quick smile, then pointed at the chalk guidelines that had been smudged; the original border had been erased by shuffling boots. The mismatch was a soft constraint, not a crisis, yet it demanded action. Mae first tried folding the lighter scraps inward to forge a blended edge, but stiff paste created ridges, leaving the seam rough. Colour still drifted from pale to deep like shallow to deep sea. Instead of trimming anything away, she chose a second path: if the shades alternated, the line could become a deliberate pattern. She invited Max to bring one darker sheet to the doorway while she kept a lighter one; if the wind grew stronger, the loose layers would peel, so they worked quickly, hands pressing flat, palms sliding over damp paper until both textures evened out. Mae lifted her airy strip while Max raised the denser one, their blues touching at the seam in a gentle, wave-shaped band.
