English 原文
Rough oak bark grazed June’s fingertips as she leaned from the counting tree, amber light sliding across her knuckles. She had already searched the shed zone; friends by the roots braided grass stems while an adult architect on the porch adjusted a drawing. The game’s last hider lingered somewhere beyond the brick promenade that split the lawn, where ripe dandelion heads glowed like tiny lamps. A distant helicopter drummed overhead, its aerial shape flaming copper for a moment before sinking behind the roofline. She needed the remaining glow to read bent grass, yet she also needed near-silence to catch a single sigh. Every drip from the garden tap echoed between pots, and the rusty hinge on the shed groaned whenever the breeze breathed through.
June stepped into the sunflower bed, pushing tall stalks aside so the last ribbon of light fell onto the soil beneath. The leaves rasped like dry paper, and that rough music drowned the hushed patterns she had been tracking. While the stalks still swayed, the terrier barked once, flinging a puff of loose dandelion seeds into an aerial swirl. The hedge corridor had been scanned earlier, yet no sign had appeared. Realising the noise cost her the quiet she relied on, she crouched low, let the stems swing back, and held her breath. Warm shadow covered the ground, yet her palm, pressed to a stone border, found a dry patch ringed by fresh dew. Someone had lingered there only moments earlier.
She edged back to the brick promenade, moving slower than the dripping tap so her steps hushed against the grass. At the porch steps, a faint shuffle echoed under the bench, and a shoe tip caught the last caramel beam between boards. June reached in, brushed cool grit off the metal latch, and Vesper wriggled out laughing while the terrier’s tail thumped the planks. Light was almost gone, and the garden stayed quiet as a breath, yet clues proved enough for seeker and hider to meet. Crickets now chirped in even pulses along the fence, replacing the slow tap that had paced the search.
