Dean waited at the flower-bed edge, his palms already smelling of damp mulch. They had left the lid balanced on the milestone; its perforations breathed out a dusty, citrus trace. Fireflies pulsed above the stems, each glow carrying a hint of resin and crushed dandelion. Lily strove to time her hands with Dean’s slower reach, but the first insect blinked dark the moment her fingers closed, leaving only the earthy scent of disturbed mulch and the thicker honey of jasmine leaning over the fence.

A sharp trill burst from beyond the rain barrel; a kingfisher skimmed past, trailing the sour splash odor of pond water. At the same instant, their mother, sorting garden tools on the porch, called for help with a stiff metal ruler once used by a draftsman; its cold iron smell mixed with the peppery odor of oilcloth. Lily jogged back, held the screen door so the ruler could be tucked away, and then hurried out again. Dusk had deepened while she was gone.
