English 原文
A bent metal watering can rocked on its thin tether beside the shed, the breeze tugging the frayed line until the spout tapped the plank wall with a dull clink. Light from the house foyer spilled across the garden strip, sliding under oak branches where Sam crept, twig in hand, grass tips brushing his shins. Each cautious step pressed brittle leaves that cracked, while, behind stacked crates near the back fence, Dawn kept still, knees on packed, cool earth. Earlier footprints around the thyme bed had already been half-blurred by mower tracks, so the path now offered no clear hint. To assist his silent sweep, Sam eased spider threads away with the twig’s smooth tip, yet the sagging cans and pots along the shed formed a maze of echoes; whenever the can tapped, the sound masked lighter noises from deeper shadows. Bright marigolds cheer up one corner by the herbs, and their splash of colour stole the last daylight, leaving the hedge corridor steadily darker.
The can clicked again, and Sam paused, palm flat on the oak’s ridged bark. The rope had been looped twice through a ring, and one loop lay slack against the wall, dusty yet still warm where a hand had tugged it; that warmth re-framed the rattle—someone, not wind, had shifted the can. He traced the slack toward the crates, noticed a fresh scrape on their gritty side, and slipped along the narrow gap. Damp air hugged the fence, but a rectangle of grass stayed oddly dry beneath a low shelf; Dawn’s sleeve brushed that patch, wiping away fine dew and revealing the clue Sam sought. A tiny squeak escaped her throat; she straightened, brushing soil from her palms. “Got me,” she whispered, and both laughed, breath puffing pale in the cooling air. They compared grass stains like badges while long shadows merged across the lawn. Sam walked back to the oak and set the twig across the stone border.
