English 原文
The bench plank warmed by noon sun pressed against Briar's shoulder blades as she shifted to balance her sketch pad on her knees. Lyle, standing at the path entrance, flipped a copper coin toward the fountain; the bright disk arced, landed with a muted plunk, and vanished inside the rolling lower pool. Briar’s elbow tightened against her ribs—she already had a running hypothesis that one oddly wide coin resting on the floor of the pool carried a starfish design, and she wanted to draw it accurately. During a reduced-flow pause the water surface smoothed, yet traffic noise stayed thick enough to muffle the lighter splash from the middle basin. She rose, crossed the warm slabs, and leaned over the slippery rim, bracing her toes for balance. The moment her head lowered for a clearer angle, her pencil slipped from the sketch pad and bounced once on the damp stone edge.
The pencil rolled toward the cascade zone, clipped a pebble used as a wedge, and the stone hopped into the pool. Concentric ripples spread, tilting the star-patterned coin until sunlight flashed from its edge; the sudden glimmer startled a pigeon sipping nearby. Wings slapped air, flicking a fan of cool drops onto Briar’s half-finished page. Water darkened the paper fibers but also lifted a faint graphite blur. She steadied her stance, then used the moist sleeve of her hoodie to amend the line work, shaping the stain into the shaded arms of the coin. For a moment, she moved like a restorer patching a mural. She began adding oceanic curls around the drawing, yet the pump motor hummed back to full pressure, raising a curtain of spray that blocked the view and pushed her a step backward. Behind her, sheets of water kept drifting from basin to basin.
