English 原文
A metal blade clanged against its guard, the sharp note sliding across the fluorescent space. The echo met Amos at the entrance mat, where the basket stack rattled as each visitor tugged one free. Saturday shopping had settled into a quiet regimen for Amos and his grandmother Iris; both knew the layout well. Iris drifted toward the fresh produce area, weighing oranges, while Amos’s intention centred on the bakery counter at the far wall. He steered a half-empty basket past numbered aisle flags, ankles brushing a low stream of chilled air that rode out from the freezer section. The cool ribbon surprised him; last week warm, dough-scented air had flowed in this corridor.
He paused where the freezer aisle crossed the bakery path. Drops from the produce mist had travelled along the tile, and the colder floor let each bead solidify into a clear marble that rolled under his shoe. He crouched, balanced on bent knees, and traced the tiny trail until it vanished beneath the bakery display. A taut plastic sheet covered the top row of spare trays, trapping warmth close to the loaves, yet a shallow draft slipped underneath and touched his fingers. He joined a small queue. The slicing machine processed one loaf at a time, its rhythm slow, so bodies shifted and weight transferred from heel to heel. While waiting, Amos lifted two identical bags from different shelves. The lower loaf felt firmer, its delicate crust already cool, whereas the higher loaf stayed pillowy.
He set the firmer bread on the counter for slicing, kept the softer one for Iris, and watched the worker feed the chosen loaf between the blades. Crumbs bounced, then rested. The queue inched forward again, and Amos turned back toward the produce corner. Behind him, a faint line of frost remained along the grout between tiles where the chilled air and stray droplets had met.
