English 原文
The plank’s inner face pressed cool and faintly damp against Kent’s forearm as he carried it from the stack to the grading table. He eased the light sheet onto the boards, shoulders rolling forward to settle the weight, and flexed his fingers before tracing the cork’s gentle spring. Kent had measured three planks already; now he wanted to grade this one before the surface dried. The colour code had been explained earlier, yet the chalk stubs lay mixed on the bench, their dusty ends staining his sweaty thumb. He sifted them, searching for the right tone, but flakes stuck together and blurred the marks. A slow exhale steadied his grip; a clean edge emerged, and the first letter appeared on the plank, though the tinted line looked weak. Lyra’s sketchbook rustled nearby. “Ready for another plank?” she asked, tapping her pencil. Kent nodded, aware that true equilibrium remained out of reach.
A brief interlude followed while he lifted the sweating water jug for a sip. Condensation slid down the glass, pooled at the base, and crawled across the table’s slight downhill tilt. The thin stream gathered magnitude drop by drop, slipped beneath the fresh cork, and the board glided a finger’s width. That tiny drift nudged the rolled-up measuring tape; the tape rolled off, snapped open like a spring, and brushed Lyra’s ankle before coiling among dry leaves. Startled, she steadied the plank with both palms. Kent crouched, felt the slick patch, and recognised the hidden slope. Using a chalk stub as a lever, he lifted the near edge and wedged a dry chip of bark underneath. The plank settled; its weight spread evenly, restoring equilibrium and leaving only a faint crescent of moisture as evidence. Content with the outcome, Kent placed the measuring tape on the flat centre of the table and lifted his hand away.
