English 原文
A fragment of red paint had rested on the tarp for only a heartbeat before a sparrow landed beside it and tapped the brittle chip with its beak. Clara’s palm lay flat against the coarse brick, testing the warmth that radiated from her upper grid square, while Pierce’s knuckles brushed the cooler shade line below. The boundary line between their sections had been erased by the first coat, and the green bucket they both needed sat between their shoes, skin of dried pigment cracking on top. A brief standoff formed: Clara held a wide brush already damp with rinse water; Pierce balanced a foam roller flecked with earlier strokes. Chalk dust clung gritty to their fingertips, and stray flakes drifted in slow entropy across the sun-softened tarp. Overhead, the wall’s surface read like a broken narrative, mortar grooves catching light in uneven ridges, while the sparrow hopped nearer, scattering tiny grains across Clara’s toes.
Pierce swirled the wooden stick, releasing a swirl of cooler paint from under the skin, yet lumps still floated. Without a word, Clara lifted a mesh scrap from the supply corner; Pierce steadied the bucket so she could strain the liquid through the rough netting. The tarp shifted under their feet, and the sparrow startled upward, wings brushing Clara’s sleeve like a dry fan. When it returned, its beak carried a straw pulled from a crack, and Clara understood the earlier pecking was not about colour but nest-building. The realisation nudged her choice: she dipped first, then passed the bucket across the fading chalk groove. Paint slid thick over her brush, leaving a cool, sticky ribbon that overlapped Pierce’s roller stipple; he smoothed the join, and their separate textures merged. Around them the lower bricks stayed damp, the upper ones dried to a slightly lighter shade, and the sparrow lifted again, vanishing toward the roof gutter. Clara pressed the tip of her brush along the fresh edge once more, sealing the seam and leaving a darker green ridge that gleamed wet against the rough brick surface.
