Where do these shells go? Yasmin kneels on wet sand. A bright sparrow hops nearby. Warm light covers the beach. She lifts a round shell. She places it on driftwood. She picks a long shell. She lines it beside the round. Mother sits on a towel. Mother says, "Nice rows." Foam slides up and touches shells. The rows tumble and mix.

Yasmin gasps and scoops quickly. She shifts to a dry spot. A small glade of grass stands. She sets driftwood there. She sorts shells again. Mother watches, thankful. The sparrow flaps onto driftwood. It drops a tiny pebble. The pebble fits the line. Yasmin smiles, happy. The new pebble shines purple.
