A sweet smell floats above the counter. Ronan stands by the sink. Four cups sit in a line. Sunshine draws bright spots on them. He looks at the first cup. The cup stays dry and light. "This cup shines," Ronan says. He moves it near the window. A distant street hum joins in. The second cup wears soap suds. A wet mark rings its base. Ronan lifts it and a drip falls. The drop lands with a soft think.

He wipes the base with cloth. He sets the cup beside the first. The third cup is tall. Butter light glows on its rim. He places it after the second. The fourth cup sticks to counter. Ronan lifts; a tiny seed drops. The seed rolls across the mark. Ronan smiles then lines the last cup. Four cups now stand in height order. The window light is bright. The sweet smell stays, softer now.
