English 原文
Dried mud had crusted along Oswin’s rubber boots since the morning walk upstream, and now he stood beside the cool blue-grey sluice boards. Corbin, who had arrived a moment earlier from the tool area, raised a quiet palm; their brief handshake served to greet each other without slowing the work. The pool behind the low stone dam shimmered silver, and fallen leaves fluttered against the overflow lip like soft cards shuffling. Oswin pressed both palms against the swollen board that guided water toward the wheel, pushing until wood scraped wet stone and a sharper stream rushed ahead. The paddles clapped louder, yet the slender stick beside the axle wobbled only slightly faster. A pale swirl gathered beneath the surface, then a cluster of soggy maple fragments wedged between two paddles and robbed the current of strength. Corbin called over the splash, “Still sluggish!” while Oswin fetched the long rake from the rack, stretching its wooden tines toward the obstruction. The first sweep lifted a handful of debris, but new leaves slid straight into the gap.
Water hissed in steady rhythm as the same trouble formed again, so Oswin shifted his footing onto a narrow steel-grey support stone for better leverage. This time he angled the rake lower, letting the tines slip under the nearest paddle before tilting upward; Corbin steadied the wheel edge with one gloved finger so the paddles paused long enough for extraction. The second haul pulled free a heavier clump mixed with twigs and even a stray floret of broccoli carried from the garden patch. The cleared channel deepened to a clearer blue, and the paddles gained a full turn each breath. A moment of still observation followed: the indicator stick swung wider, and irrigation water continued to reach the rows of young plants without running dry. Spray arced farther, landing beyond the splash zone onto the bench legs where a parent read quietly; the cold water washed away a layer of winter dust that had dulled the metal. Under the newly bright surface, the wheel kept revolving.
