What moves behind the fence?

Hugo stands still and looks.

Tall grass hides a small shape.

Warm light rests on his hair.

A tiny feather drifts down.

It touches his right shoulder.

A soft cluck rings nearby.

A chicken kicks light dirt.

The dirt flies toward Hugo.

One grain lands on his nose.

Hugo blinks but stays still.

He keeps his steady look.

A low bush sways once.

A snail slides out slowly.

Its cold trail brushes his shoe.

The grown-up says, "Duckling there!"

A yellow duckling waddles past.

Red sauce dries on his sleeve.

Hugo tilts his chin higher.

Now the duckling sits in view.

The sauce spot now looks darker.
