Clyde crouched, knees bending until thigh muscles tightened, and brought his eyes level with the curved meniscus. The numbers had been etched accurately, yet the line of water looked higher than the last entry. He stood, wiped fog from the window pane vigorously with his sleeve, and compared the mark inside the warm porch logbook.

A sharp metallic rattle burst from the shed hinge; the wind had swung the loose door. Clyde hurried across the grass to push it shut, feeling soles slide on the slick slate. Celina, seated on the porch with a paperback, glanced up only long enough to say, “Door’s secure now.” Another shower arrived without warning. Clyde ducked beneath the porch roof, watching new beads chase each other down the gauge. When the shower eased, he returned to the post and noticed fresh rings spreading across the surface water. The wooden support had been tilted by slow ground settling; from the uphill side the water scored five millimetres, from the downhill side seven. He circled the post once, twice, shoulders brushing the low branches, until every view confirmed the uneven reading.

Clyde knelt, pressed a fingertip against the cold glass, and wrote the average value instead of a single line. If the sky opened again, the number on the glass would rise before he reached the porch, yet the tilt would stay. He closed the logbook, slipped the pencil into the tin, and counted what remained inside: four sharp points, a broken stub, and one empty slot.
