A metal lid tapped the glass once, the thin ring sliding into the cricket chorus that filled the dusk. The jar rested on the warm porch step, a trickle from an earlier rinse drying along one side, and one firefly was already being carried in slow circles by the curved wall. Remy crossed the stone, the soft glow of the porch light laying gold across his ankles before the cool grass closed around his toes. Basil, the tabby cat, paused beside the coiled hose and took a quick nibble from a forgotten cracker crumb, the tiny snack cracking between sharp teeth. Overhead, the remaining amber lifted into a wide panorama that brushed the first blue-grey. A parent sorted trowels under the lamp behind the screen door and called, “All good?” Remy lifted the jar in reply; the punctured lid breathed out faint lemonade.

He had already loosened the lid, its thread scraping like sandpaper. Moving toward the lawn centre, he kept the glass level; every green pulse outside was being magnified slightly by the curved surface. A second spark flashed near the jasmine. Remy crouched, opened the lid just enough, and raised the mouth beneath the floating light. The newcomer drifted in, yet the earlier captive shot through the same gap and vanished toward the fence. His shoulders jerked upright; fixing the capture of one had cost the grip on the other. If another spark darted close, his hand would block the exit, but that narrow shield also shaded the opening and scared the insects dark. The shared need for space and speed had linked both problems.

After a slow breath, he arranged a compromise: the jar sat on the nearest stepping stone, his palm covering three-quarters of the mouth while the lid balanced like a small door on the remaining quarter. A late pulse floated through; two lights now drifted inside, though faint scratches on the wall showed where others had escaped. Dew cooled his fingers, and when the crickets paused their rhythm, he set the jar down beside the porch broom and released the lid onto the glass.
