No clatter reached the landing bowl, so Lyra crawled forward and tapped the tube with one careful knuckle. A dull rattle answered from deep inside, yet the sphere refused to emerge. She lifted the tube and spotted a slight dip where moisture darkened the cardboard like a faint cloud. Kent, kneeling by the support stack, frowned at the glossy hardcover that had slipped sideways during the last roll. A faint draft from the hallway brushed past, and the loose marble rolled backward until it nudged Lyra’s finger. They released the marble from the shelf again. It clacked onto the book spine, zipped over the newfound slick ramp, and shot into the waiting bowl with a crisp chime. Excess water flicked off during the ride and dotted the blue-grey carpet in a faint line. Lyra wiped the marble dry, set it back on the shelf, and reclined on her heels. Fine scratches now striped the book’s glossy jacket where glass had skimmed it, and a silver reflection slid across each groove as the lamp’s cone shifted.
