English 原文
Clack—clack—rattle, and a ring echoed under the shelf. The marble bounced from the bookshelf edge and rolled into the first tube, each joint giving a ping where coloured tape stretched tight. Tatum crouched beside the book-and-block platform, aiming for one goal: guide the glass bead to the landing bowl without a pause. Lily knelt opposite; her knees pressed into carpet, fingers drumming beside echoes. Halfway along, the marble slowed, the hum fading until silence swallowed it at a shallow turn. The gentle descent after that bend stole too much speed. Lily started to exclaim, yet she pinched her lips instead. Tatum pulled out the paperback wedged under the turn, wanting a lower angle. The tube slid like a heaving rock on slick cover, then balanced on hardcover edges. They released the marble again—clatter, then a plink as it skidded across carpet like pebbles on a scree slope. First attempt lost.
Footsteps thudded through the hallway, jarring the straight-tube joint apart. The next marble would drop to carpet. Noemi at the supply pile kept cutting tubes; scissors snipped while the children worked. Tatum crawled back, nearly letting her wrist stumble over the cover, then grabbed a wooden chopstick. With the stick as a lever she heaved the loose tube into line, and Lily wrapped fresh tape around the joint. The collar pressed tight without any click, only a rub of adhesive. If the repair stayed aligned, the bead would glide the way to the bowl. They launched the marble; every turn answered with rattles, and the bowl waited with its ring. Yet a drip from the rinsed bead soaked the last cardboard ramp; the surface sagged, steering the glass under the sofa. A tabby sniffed, batted twice, and trotted off, the faint chime of the marble ringing inside its collar bell.
