Archie knelt at the book-and-block platform, head close, counting the beats like slow drums: rattle-rattle-pause, rattle-rattle. That tiny pause meant the marble had already lost more speed than the next ramp could return. A thick atlas, tallest landmark in the structure, lifted the launch shelf above his knees. Yet the shallow turn below still robbed energy, and the marble stopped with a single clink against the inner wall. He had placed a thin paperback under that segment as a shim, but the glossy cover kept drifting along carpet fibres. With one brisk gesture he folded a postcard, jammed it against the tube, and watched another test marble run. The taps smoothed, though the lingering dip urged him to interpret message hidden in those uneven knocks.

A sudden metallic ring burst from the kitchen, and Basil’s distant timer signalled that water had reached a rolling boil. Archie rose instinctively; steam had once warped a ramp, so he hurried to silence the whistle. The trip took seconds, yet footsteps along the hallway made the carpet vibrate while he was gone. When he returned, silence hung above the run, but the cardboard and blocks beneath it had already shifted. Condensation from the recently rinsed marble had soaked the landing zone, and the softened cardboard now bowed inward. A small plastic trophy from the supply pile had toppled during the brief carpet tremor. It now lay against the tube, completely blocking his usual wooden support block from sliding. The next marble clattered inside the long opaque section and finally stalled somewhere beyond sight. Archie tapped along the tube, ear against the cardboard, tracking the faint shuffle until he located the stuck glass sphere.

He fetched a spare wedge-shaped block from the supply pile and slid it where the cardboard bowed. The tube creaked above the books, rising just enough for gravity to speak again through the wooden frame. Space was tight, so Archie pushed the fallen trophy under the wedge; its polished column formed a surprisingly steady pillar. That tiny adjustment altered the angle; the next launch sang rattle, ring, clatter, then the marble reached the bowl. Archie nodded once, certain that sound could guide construction as surely as sight ever did. Under the sofa, the cat twitched at rolling echoes, swatted the cloudy marble, and chased it toward the table’s shadow.

他取來一塊備用楔形木塊，塞進紙板凹陷處。紙管在書本上嘎吱一聲，微微升起，重力再度開始工作。空間狹窄，他乾脆把倒下的獎杯推到楔塊底下，光滑的柱身意外變成最穩的支點。這細微調整讓角度有指尖寬的差別；下一次發射響起喀啦、叮、啵的節奏後，彈珠順利落進碗裡。阿奇點了點頭，確信聲音和視覺一樣能指引搭建。在沙發下，貓因滾動的回音抖了一下耳朵，拍向那顆先前溜出的雲霧彈珠，然後把它追進桌子陰影中。
