English 原文
The pointed stick felt slick between Neve's damp fingers as she hovered over the size tray. She twisted it fast, and a sharp plop cut the quiet; the red circle tore, sending droplets pattering like rain across the surface. Two beads bounced against the metal rim; the comb had been balanced too close, so it rattled, slid, and tapped a water cup. The cup quivered, its rim ringing before Neve's elbow caught it. If spilled, coloured water would soak the paper stack. A faint static snap leapt from the comb teeth, enough to spark creativity into an unintended spray. She tried to fathom the messy swirl, but the liquid hissed and the chance for a clean spiral slipped away.
At the paint-mixing table, she swirled a thick blue lump with water. The stir stick scraped the cup wall, producing a steady rasp that drowned the distant drips from other trays. Beside her, Sian called colour distances—"Wide! Narrow!"—trying to catch up with each plop she heard from the main basin. Neve tipped a droplet onto a shallow dish of size; it spread with a slow sigh, its edge branching like an estuary meeting the tide. She jotted pencil marks along the dish rim; the tiny scratches held key insights about thickness and spread, though the graphite left only a dry whisper on the damp wood. A last swirl clinked the stick against the cup before she carried a fresh sheet toward the preparation bench, where smocks rustled and sheets thumped onto the drying rack.
A faint clatter crossed the floorboards while Neve neared the tray; the pointed stick, nudged by a stool, spun to her shoe and tapped the tray leg. She stooped, caught it, and the surface below stayed calm. Without pausing, she dipped the tip and turned it slowly. Only a low murmur rose as paint tightened into a neat spiral, squeezing earlier rings into tiny shells. Sian waited, holding the final prepared sheet. Neve guided it edge-first, a soft shush marking contact, rolling the paper flat. Colour gripped the fibres, and she lifted right away. The wet sheet slid under her thumbs toward the rinsing basin as the alum-treated stack behind her rustled empty.
