Riverbank Slate Steadies the Wobbling Message Board-

English 原文
A flat slate, a milk-white quartz pebble, and a narrow shard of basalt lay in a shallow hollow beside the path. Beside them, a damp crescent on the packed gravel showed where a stone had slid away after the last small wave. Kane crouched, letting his knees creak, and ran his thumb under the slate; fine powder dusted his palm. He lifted the slab, elbows tightening as the weight pulled toward the river, then set it upright on its thin edge two paces from the water. His shoes wobbled over loose pebbles and the click of shifting gravel rippled through his legs. A wooden message board leaned nearby, its feet propped by two equally broad stones so notices would not blow into the riverbank breeze.
Sun had baked the riverbed through a long drought, so even mid-stream pebbles felt lighter than usual once he shook off water. Kane fetched three flat pieces from the waterline and, with shoulders rolling to keep balance, stacked them onto the slate. Each release demanded sharp wrist control because a gust arrived between breaths, trying to twist the tower. When he added the fourth layer, the message board lurched; the stone he had borrowed from its base now sat inside his growing stack, and the board’s frame lost integrity. A wooden corner scraped, producing a dry rasp that carried across the gravel. Kane straightened, ankles stiff, and watched the board quiver against the wind.
He rocked on his heels, then lowered a knee to the ground and conveyed the top stone back onto the slate, freeing the heavy slab he had stolen. Moments later he slid that slab under the message board again, nudging it until the frame stood steady, though the tower shrank by one level. To replace the missing tier, he rolled a wet algae-slick pebble from the waterline into his palm and eased it onto the reduced stack; droplets darkened the dry faces and slowed tiny slips, giving the tower a rough but workable resolution. The flat slate that had rested beside the quartz pebble now braced the board’s leg, and Kane patted the coarse wood.
