Cora pressed the cool rim tighter against her ear, and a faint metallic tang drifted from the hollow interior with each breath she drew. Warm, crushed grass coated the air around her shoes, while the low hedge nearby leaked a sticky, resin-sweet smell that clung like syrup. Ahead, Kieran balanced on a flat stone; freshly split twigs on the hedge top gave off a peppery aroma that stung his nose as he traced the cotton string. The line shone silver for a moment, then drooped. A burr hidden in the can’s base muffled his words, so he pinched the string and pulled. He had already tested the line once this morning, and the spare cans had been arranged in a careful row whose neatness pleased him. If the wind lifted again, the loose fibres would swallow every syllable.

The tension returned; Cora caught a clear vibration that tasted almost brassy on her tongue, yet the spool by her feet toppled. As the string slid, its outer layers uncoiled, dragging across damp clover that smelled of cold tea. Each metre that Kieran used to tighten the span left a tangle behind, and the once- tidy basket now breathed the dusty scent of frayed cotton and woven wicker rubbed raw. Cora crouched, nose wrinkling at the earthy whiff rising from soil exposed beneath the trampled blades. The terrain between them no longer lay in a straight corridor; the line brushed a knobbly branch, dulling the signal. She weighed two options: restore the taut route or rescue the snarled spool before knots bit deep.

She chose balance. Leaving her can upright on the grass, she guided the spool under the hedge gap, then looped the slack around a lower twig so the branch itself carried part of the weight. Kieran rotated his can a quarter turn; the burr now faced away, and the words travelled clean enough to follow. A distant field cabin released an old, smoky scent as wind circled past it, yet the new path held firm. Behind them, the looped string began a slow, regular twang against the twig—softer than before, but even, and it continued without any hand upon it.
