Zara pressed her thumb firmly against the plastic circle, forcing the edge to lie flat. While Zev walked down the staircase for yesterday’s tangled parachute, she raised the scissors and cut a free-hand circle. The blades rasped, and static made the thin sheet cling to her forearm like dry ivy. Four holes had been punched, yet one sat too close to the rim, so cotton strings slipped through at uneven angles. A crumpled worksheet from last week’s academic pursuit drifted under the bench and tapped her ankle as the breeze changed. Zara, a steady scholar of small mechanics, tied each string to a smooth wooden bead. She knew the light sheet would interact with rising air differently once it hung below the railing.

At the drop railing, higher wind rolled warm across her knuckles and nudged the light payload sideways. She waited until the ribbon hanging beside her drooped, then let the parachute slip free. The canopy opened with a soft pop, yet the short hole pulled tight, turning the circle into an oval in mid-air. It drifted past the chalk target and landed as a small red beacon within a kaleidoscope of earlier coloured parachutes. On the grass, Zara turned the fallen canopy between her fingers and felt one side stretch more than the other. Back at the bench she rotated a fresh sheet; if the breeze rose again, the new cut would resist pull. On the second release the parachute swayed within the chalk ring and settled among the others. A forgotten bead rolled from a plank crack to her shoe and sparkled against the wood grain.
