Vita lunged over a shining puddle and pressed a greying driftwood stick to the beach’s moisture-rich surface, salt steam curling into her nose. She returned to this low-tide strip every weekend, so the absent shallow runnel that normally divided the sand made her squint at the smooth plain. The packed area smelled metallic, as though yesterday’s downpour had rinsed iron from distant rocks and left its tang behind. A stretch nearer the water carried the stronger algae scent she liked for clean lines, so she planted her toes there and dragged the stick, imagining a leaping dolphin that would greet her sister’s rising sandcastle behind the dry border. A tiny terrier followed, sniffing the air and shaking droplets from its whiskers.

The groove grew quickly; damp sides held sharp shadows while Vita leaned forward, tasting fine salt on her lips. Beside the dry grains, Orla packed another bucket of wet sand; she did not converse with Vita, yet their separate tasks moved in rhythm with the same low hiss of waves. A sudden gull swooped at the dog; claws flashed, feathers smelt oily, and the terrier exploded after it. Vita jumped aside, dashed toward the commotion, and steadied the overturned water bucket before it soaked the sandcastle’s wall. During those breaths away, a longer surge rolled in. Cool foam reached her drawing, washed through the lower fins, and retreated leaving a fishy odour and a thin film that blurred every fresh cut. Orla lifted her head and called, “Wave touched your picture!”

She hurried back, skin prickling from salt, and stopped. The upper half of the dolphin still curved clearly, but a new silver ribbon of water had been etched where the missing runnel once lay, joining her lines like an extra tail. The smell around it was earthy, as if buried clay had opened. Vita turned the stick sideways, deepened the intact grooves, and let the trickle finish the rest. Without talking, she and Orla laughed; grains sprinkled from the terrier’s coat and peppered the wet surface. The tide crept closer, its scent now sharper than metal. Vita brushed sand from her fingers and walked toward their mother’s blanket. Behind her, the ribbon split and a second stream slipped through the untouched eye of the dolphin.

Vita 折返，鹽分刺痛皮膚，隨即停住。海豚的上半仍清晰彎曲，但一條新的銀色水帶正好在先前缺失的溝痕處刻出，像多長的尾巴連上她的線條。周圍氣味轉為土腥，像被埋的黏土剛被打開。Vita 把木棒橫過，加深仍完好的刻痕，讓細流完成剩下的部分。兩人沒開口，只是大笑；狗抖下的沙粒四散落在濕沙面。潮線再度逼近，氣味比金屬還銳利。Vita 拍掉指間沙粒，朝媽媽鋪在高處的毛毯走去。她背後，那條水帶分岔，第二股細流悄悄滑入海豚尚未被碰觸的眼睛。
