English 原文
A copper tang sharpened on Ula’s tongue while the bellows gave an uneven sigh. She traced the taste back to the reed pipe above her head, its note wobbling inside the cramped room. Outside, carousel melodies carried sweetness, yet in here the tune arrived raw, each perforation clicking through the slow-paced cardboard book. She wiped a finger across the pipe’s brass lip and tested the residue with her teeth, searching for the flaw she could not yet figure out. Nevertheless, the taste shifted again, hinting at trouble deeper than surface tarnish.
The leather bellows, resilient after years of patching, thumped again, spraying a fresh gust that tasted of stale oil. Ula loosened the regulating screw so the card would slow down, giving her space to inspect the sticky valve seat. Scarcely had her screwdriver met the screw when the melody outside dipped, a child’s cheer snapping into puzzled silence beyond the wall. Tightening again restored the tempo, yet the sour note persisted, as though the pipe sought its own stubborn accompaniment. Even the air tasted brittle, and she wondered whether humidity rather than pressure might relate to the problem.
The service hatch clicked, and Grey ducked under the crankshaft, grease smudging the edge of his sleeve. “Crowd’s restless,” he said, seating himself beside the bellows hinge. Ula’s hand hovered above the screw, the tool suspended while she recalculated the cost of another tweak. She tapped the wavering reed; Grey handed her beeswax, its sweetness softening metal on her fingertips. Wax seated, Grey released the valve first, his knuckles whitening until air found its new path. Raising pressure cleared the sour edge, yet doing so quickened the tune, turning the outside horses faster than the operator preferred. Grey whispered something lost in machinery, but Ula had already loosened the screw once more, aware the two adjustments tugged at opposite ends of the same cable.
They settled on a half-turn adjustment: the bellows kept their rhythm, the card advanced, yet the tempo outside eased into a gentle swirl instead of its former gallop. A whistle from the ride operator cut through the wall, and scattered claps rose outside, the carousel now a slow-paced ring that let small hands cling comfortably to painted poles. Ula paused, sleeve brushed across her lips, registering the faint sweetness the beeswax left on skin where earlier metal had ruled. She touched the pipe’s rim again—the same motion, the new aftertaste—and the clack of the advancing card seemed to slow down just enough for the room to breathe with her.
