English 原文
Every afternoon Grey lifted the same cross-peen hammer, yet today a faint seam stretched across the anvil’s mirror-bright face. Steam curled from a bar still glowing orange, but the pale line remained cool, refusing the heat that tightened Grey’s skin. Scale flakes snapped under his boots when he shifted weight, and the draft near the door brushed the back of his neck. A routine movement stalled, his knuckles hovering above the hammer’s grip while the forge fire breathed cherry to white.
He turned a pair of half-finished hinges, slid them into the fire until they blushed, then circled back toward the waiting anvil. Each visit added another fragment: filings lodged against the seam, blue oxide curling on its edge, orange light breaking as though two surfaces held a silent rivalry. The growing scatter of clues turned simple forging into a challenging situation; the misaligned pattern posed a quiet quandary that his next strike could worsen. Bellows sighed, coal roared, and seconds fled before the hinges cooled past plasticity, yet he set the first hinge beside the line untouched.
Inside the cooling hinge fine steam drifted upward like breath on winter glass, and Grey paused, thumb pressed against metal no longer forgiving. With a shorter motion than usual he angled the workpiece, scraped its edge along the seam, and watched scale dust sweep sideways in brittle curls. A paper-thin ribbon of slag lifted, revealing unbroken steel that returned the anvil to a single smooth plane. Grey saw boundaries dissolve as though a sketched political landscape had blurred, the balance of power redrawn by nothing more than weight and polish.
Grey reached for the hammer again, the leather now warmed by constant fire rather than dampened by doubt. He raised it, yet this time the arc shortened, his wrist guiding the head with measured restraint instead of eager force. Grey lowered the hammer onto the anvil face, and a brighter ring chased a ripple across the quench water.
