English 原文
Light from a single blue bulb hissed above the costume rail and printed sharp bands across the backstage boards. Heat gathered under that stripe, and Fenna, the small theater cat, stepped onto the warm plank. Her paws pressed once, then twice, as if testing an invisible cushion. She cruised along the line toward a wooden crate, whiskers lifting in the rising air. The bulb’s warmth met a silver trumpet lying nearby; the metal shimmered and gave off faint heat. A loose power cord lay tangled under the instrument, but Fenna slipped past without touching it. Behind the curtain, muffled piano notes drifted, yet no audience noise reached this narrow space.
Near the crate stood a low table. A kettle sat on a glowing plate, and thin steam rolled upward. Drops gathered on the kettle lid, then popped onto a rolled canvas that showed the outline of a long voyage at sea. Each drop darkened the cloth for an instant, then cooled. Fenna sniffed the heated metal, then tapped it and sprang back when warmth climbed through her pads. She tried again beside the handle, where the surface felt only mild. Henrik, the stagehand, walked in, rubbing his palms. “Water is almost ready,” he said, but he did not notice the cat perched beside the kettle.
Henrik turned toward a shelf and lifted a candle, part of yesterday’s light-gel experiment. The plate’s heat had softened its base, and wax now slid across the wood. A tiny stream reached a model cruise ship stored for next week’s play; the wax formed a glossy ramp, and the ship rolled forward until its bow touched the cooled kettle. Fenna’s ears flicked at the quiet thud. She leaped onto a costume trunk, tail high, while Henrik wiped the wax with a rag. The model stayed half-tilted against the metal, and warm steam still curled around its painted deck.
