English 原文
Metal wheels clacked over the cobblestones, rising and fading under the cloth awnings.
Each market morning, Sian lifted small wooden animals onto her narrow display table. A blue whale figure pressed its flat belly against the front edge, while a bright clay lobster waited beside a neat tower of pocket notebooks. Theo paused with a sack of oranges and called, "Morning, Sian. Crowds already!" She laughed, kept working, and checked the table’s balance with her palm. The back left leg always leaned on a loose stone, yet the familiar tilt stayed gentle enough for business.
A delivery cart rolled past and sank one wheel into a shallow groove. The ground shuddered; Sian’s table answered with a slow wobble. The whale slid first, pushing the lobster, and both figures nudged the notebooks toward the gap between planks. She lunged a forearm across the row just in time, but the sudden shift pressed her weight onto the weak leg. Wood groaned, the table pitched forward, and a single notebook dropped. Its thin spine struck the stones, bounced, then settled open. Between two blank pages lay a curled silver button. The tiny object had rested there unnoticed; its discovery surprised even Theo, who crouched to look. "That fell like a coin from the sky," he said, touching the cool metal. Behind them, a stall of designer scarves fluttered, yet no breeze reached the ground.
Sian reset the table by sliding the whale farther back as a counterweight. She wedged the fallen button under the bad leg, and the wobble eased. The notebooks returned to a neat stack, their corners aligned. At last, she lifted the rescued button onto the whale’s flat back and stepped aside.
