Grey light fills the room.

June kneels on the carpet square. She glues a pink paper flower to a wide card. A gold sweet wrapper, a paper dress shape, and a photo of a tall wedding cake wait beside her. A small toy cat sits near the edge.

Nolan sees the card bend. "It dips," he says. The wet paintbrush in the jar knocks the card. The wrapper slides. The flower lifts.

Nolan grips the card corner. June steadies the paintbrush. The wrapper stops moving. The dress shape still curls up.

Nolan presses the cool glue stick along the curl. He smooths the dress shape flat. June taps the card. The pieces stay.

Rain taps again. Chalk dust drifts down. June lifts the finished card toward the window. Nolan scoops the toy cat, rises, and skips into the bright hallway.
