English 原文
Green algae loosened by the slow current sent up a sharp, fish-salty note, close to anchovy. Mae stood at the wind-exposed spot facing the water, where the air carried a cool, metallic scent of wet rock. Two paces back, the dry stone pile released a powder-dust smell whenever she lifted a piece, and gravel rattled under her shoes. A small bird landed on a nearby rock; its claws made a quick metallic tick, then it hopped away. Her parent sat on a flat stone, book open; dry paper carried a faint library whiff. Up the bank, the old stone schoolhouse gave a chalk-dry breath in the warmth, and her parent, a mentor there, turned a page. Mae pressed a flattish base stone into place and tested a second layer. A gust edged in; the top piece tapped once, slipped, and fell with a harmless clack.
She tried a smoother candidate from the waterline. As she turned it over, a green tang lifted, stronger than before, and the wet skin felt slick. She set it anyway; the film made a slow, silent slide begin the moment her fingers left. Before she could catch it, a lean tower behind the big boulder loosened and folded, stones clicking in a quick chain. A few pieces rolled near her base and nudged it; the dog beside the book sniffed, sneezed, and stepped aside with a soft pad-scrape. “That fell fast,” her parent said, voice low. Mae paused. If she kept chasing height here, the upper layers would slide off the wind-polished faces. A pale nimbus edged the sun, light cooled, and the dry pile’s dust-smell rose again as she widened her stance. She changed the order: lay many flat stones first, crossing edges. The scattered pieces and the driest ovals became a low, woven mat that hugged the ground. She waited through each gust, then released during the short lull.
She added one more thin oval, edges crossing like simple basket reeds, and the dog’s nose followed it, tasting the air. “Maybe lower this time,” Mae said, setting her palms flat for a breath and then lifting away. Around the mat, a few loosened pebbles clicked once and then stopped. The river kept its hollow slap.
