English 原文
A half-open book lay across two plates, and Rhea’s knees already pressed into the centre flat. A slim white bird dropped to the downhill corner and pecked along the chequered edge of the picnic blanket. The wicker basket rested at the uphill edge with its lid propped open; behind it, small containers leaned in a crowded row. Uneven grass pushed a faint ridge under the cloth, so a paper plate rocked when Willa let her fingers go light. The small dog sat on the border, leash tied to the basket handle, tail thumping the cloth with a quick cadence that nudged a fork. A gust lifted the wind-side edge, then the stones settled it again. Beyond the grass border, the park path held a soft murmur of wheels and voices. Willa slid the nearest plates toward the lid’s shelter and set one knee on the warm squares to steady them.
As her weight shifted uphill, the lid’s hinge swung; the loop slipped, and the serving spoon dropped inside and vanished. Willa rose onto her toes; the bird lifted at once, beak snapping not at crumbs but at a mayfly that hovered above the corner. “Small wings,” Rhea said. The crumb line along the edge stayed where it was. The bird—now clear as a tern, with a forked tail and a dark cap—hovered once and slid higher. Willa reached to the grass border, grabbed the rubber porpoise the dog chewed, and wedged it under the low side of the rocking plate. Keeping her forearm along the lid, she angled the latch aside and drew the spoon through a narrow gap without opening the lid wide.
The downhill corner looked patched but steady: one plate propped on a toy, cutlery gathered against her braced knee. The basket lid leaned at an angle instead of wide open, still breaking the breeze for the plates she had nudged close. A wedge of tree shadow had crept over the cloth; the tilted lid now shaded the berries, and their skins stayed firm despite the sun. “Better,” Rhea said, shifting her book to the wind-side and leaving a flat mark in the warmed squares. Willa set the spoon beside the bowl.
