English 原文

Maren watched a pale oval on the window, low in the corner where the reading lamp’s circle clipped the glass. The stain held its place like a thumbprint in dust, faint and matte against the sliding silhouettes outside.

She shifted under the heavy blanket until one cheek met the cold pane, and warm breath left a cloud that swelled, smudged, and vanished. Click-click, click-click came through the mattress; the rhythm reached her jaw as a soft pulse before it reached her ears. A metallic tang rode up from the floor vent, clean and thin, while a vintage thermos with a shallow dent sat near the fold-down table’s worn edge. Above, the curtain swayed; a misfit button on its hem never reached its loop and hung sideways like a loose tooth.

Another breath met the glass and disappeared as completely as the first, the surface clearing before the rail tempo counted to four. She breathed again, closer to the oval, watched the fog shrink to nothing, and then let her eyes drop to the water glass as its rings drew and redrew tiny circles. Her hand rose to wipe the corner, paused midair, and drifted back to the blanket’s edge instead. “Still awake?” Ingrid’s voice floated down, hushed by wool and distance. “Mm,” Maren answered, not moving her mouth from the cold.

Breath after breath went into the window, and the pane accepted each one without a trace left behind. The lamp hummed almost silently; outside, two signal lights seemed to diverge and then fold back to one as the car turned. She angled her nose toward the stain, making smaller clouds now, spacing them to the click-click as if laying down steps the same size each time. The oval continued to look like nothing more than old residue, a patch softer than the rest of the glass.

The next breath didn’t vanish. A clear bead formed and held, then let go and walked a narrow path along the oval’s lower edge. Another bead joined and the two diverged, each thread choosing its own track across a faint grain invisible until the water made it show.

Under the bead, a shape resolved—fine, parallel lines splayed like a small feather, the avifauna of the night reduced to pale glue that had outlasted whoever placed it there. The droplet traced the barbs, slowed at a thicker ridge, and left a darker seam that caught the lamp with a sudden glint. Maren kept her face near, steadying the rhythm of her breaths, not to erase anything, only to watch where the next line would run.

The cabin settled into its soft sway again; the curtain marked the lean, the thermos kept its dented shine, and the water glass trembled back to perfect circles. Maren drew her gaze to the window she had first studied and pressed a fingertip beneath the corner of the pale oval. A tiny ridge—dried and almost smooth—caught her nail as she held the spot in the lamplight.
