Reese stands on the boardwalk planks. His weight rests through his heels. The plank grain lines his soles. Older sand sits flat in a gap. His sister sits by the rolled-up towel. A cheetah pattern runs along the cloth. She waves.

He steps to the shoreline. Foam pops at the wet edge. He kneels at arm's length. The round white pebble shines. A lifeguard sits in the tall chair. A small marker flag rests below. He walks to the rocks now. At the hollow log, dark kelp covers part. He leans to the side. Pale salt rings mark the rim.

He heads back the same way. By the rocks, a bird print slowly fills. A thin line of water seeps. At the shoreline, a tiny star glints. On the boardwalk, a beetle clicks along.

He arrives near his sister again. "I am here," she says. Her palm rests on the cheetah cloth. Salt smell now drifts by the boardwalk.
