A pale sky stretched above the quiet station while Luca checked the departure board for delays. The ticket in his pocket had been printed by an old machine, and its edges felt rough against his thumb. He had always chosen pragmatic routes with no surprises, yet a solitary suitcase beside bench fourteen caught his attention. Its surface, once black, now carried a sparkling film of rainwater that mirrored the rising light. An official notice warned travelers not to leave luggage unattended, but no one stood nearby. Luca crouched, brushing cold droplets from the metal lock, and the wheels rattled gently against the tiles.
A soft click escaped the lock before he touched it, as if the mechanism remembered another code. Inside, instead of clothes, lay a stack of notebooks marked "Field Notes—Arctic.“ The handwriting appeared firm, insightful, and every margin held sketches of rare birds. A smaller envelope rested on top, addressed to “The One Who Listens.” He hesitated; if he had ignored the luggage, the novel material might have vanished forever. Footsteps approached, steady yet light. A woman in a weather-worn parka halted beside him. Her gaze fixed on the open case, and her shoulders straightened like a formidable wall.
“Thank you for guarding my research,” she said, voice low but calm. Luca offered the envelope, and her gloved fingers tightened around it. She explained that the notebooks had been misplaced during a night transfer; the suitcase traveled on without her. Rain intensified, drumming against the iron roof, and the station lights flickered. The woman reached into the case, produced a folded map, and handed it over. She added no reason, yet the gesture carried weight. A whistle echoed, doors slid open, and crowds drifted toward the waiting carriages. On the concrete, one small brass key lay between faint lines of oil.
