Milo reached the quiet lake before dawn, tripod knocking softly against his backpack. He hoped to capture the first emerald heron that visitors had reported yesterday. The idea of a thrilling photograph tightened his grip on the camera. Tiny ripples broke the mirror surface, but no tall bird stepped into view. He waited, the sky brightened, and distant footsteps startled a cluster of ducks instead. A flash of wings touched the reeds, yet the shape vanished before Milo focused. He shifted closer, though damp soil dragged at his boots. The battery icon blinked red, and his earlier confidence slipped. If Milo had packed a spare battery, the search would have continued without worry. Rather than give up, he checked the old manual lens, planning to carry out one clear shot with limited power.
By mid-morning Jocelyn arrived, cheeks flushed from cycling, her voice low to avoid scaring wildlife. Milo’s determined stare met hers over the lens. A sudden whirlwind of leaves spun between them, shaken loose by a playful gust, and the heron glided down behind the shifting veil. The branch had been shaken by the same wind, bending just enough for Jocelyn to notice a nest. Her arm rose, but she froze, unwilling to alarm the bird.
The scene balanced on silence until a barking dog crashed through nearby grass. Jocelyn’s timely intervention saved the moment; she slipped a biscuit toward the dog, diverting its noisy paws. Distant sunlight rippled across the water, tinting the scene with pale gold while time seemed to stretch like soft dough. The heron settled again, neck arched like a metal question mark. Milo exhaled, steadied the tripod, and finally pressed the shutter. The screen revealed not one bird but two, mirrored on the water like twin emerald spears. Two bright photos rested on the park bench, edges fluttering under a calmer breeze.
