Saturday morning, Milo stepped into the covered street market. He aimed to purchase a small gift for his friend’s birthday. Stalls stretched in two rows, their lights blinking above baskets of fruit and boxes of novelty toys. A bright paper teaser shaped like a kite bobbed over one particular stand. Its quick flashes of yellow caught Milo’s attention between passing umbrellas. The vendor, who arranged painted cubes on a cloth, turned wooden pieces so their colors faced the walkway. Milo has visited the market many times, yet the puzzle’s shifting images still surprised him. He reached toward a polished cube on the front corner of the cloth. A jostling pair of tourists brushed his shoulder and loosened the coins in his pocket.

The coins skittered down, giving a metallic trinkle against the wet stones before slipping under a nearby crate. At the same moment, the line was slowed by a group taking photos. The path narrowed until Milo’s shoes nearly touched the flood-barrier boards. Two forces crowded him: the missing money and the growing queue. He knelt and slid a folded brochure beneath the crate. He then flicked it forward, and each coin rolled back into daylight. When he finally straightened, the tourists had drifted aside, clearing space. The vendor, noticing the empty counter, had placed the last puzzle inside a paper sleeve. Milo tapped the recovered coins together and completed his purchase. He tucked the wrapped puzzle inside his backpack as the rain eased.
