Early afternoon rain had stopped, leaving small puddles along the town river. Milo carried a bright greeting card, which he had painted with watercolors during the weekend. He wanted to reach his grandmother’s apartment on the opposite bank before supper, so he hurried toward the wooden bridge. Halfway there, he found unexpected trouble: a local television crew had occupied the entrance. Cameras, cables, and umbrellas crowded the narrow path, while a producer whispered instructions nobody could hear clearly. Milo raised the card above the puddles, but a gust pushed it sideways and the corner dipped into water. The smooth plan he had prepared was suddenly tangled by people, weather, and wet paper.

He stepped back, noticing a maintenance plank running under the main railing, where painters had been working earlier. The space was just wide enough for one foot at a time. Milo folded the greeting card, slipped it into his jacket, and tried the side plank. Fresh paint made the surface slick, and a cameraman’s cable swung across his knees. Instead of forcing his way, Milo knelt, lifted the cable, and let it rest behind him. A painter who had watched in silence offered a steady hand; no words passed, yet quiet understanding showed in matching nods. Five careful steps later, Milo reached the far end. Rainlight touched the card again, giving its colors a gentle shine while he straightened it on the porch mat, whose thick fibers gave the hallway a feel at home warmth.
