English 원문
Lewis balanced a shallow wooden crate against his hip and crossed the campus courtyard. Inside the crate, dictionaries and atlases pressed together like a voracious animal locked between planks, eager to spill out. Noon foot-traffic rolled in one direction toward the cafeteria; his path angled the other way. Each step felt like trying to swim against the tide of backpacks and half-opened umbrellas. A brass band rehearsed on a distant balcony, and the uneven bursts of trumpets scattered pigeons toward the library’s glass doors, where a brief queue rippled and closed again.
Near the entrance, a cold gust curled across the stones. Loose pages fluttered, slapped his jacket, and one slender volume slid free. He stooped, but another passer-by’s rolling suitcase clipped the corner, sending the book skittering farther. An apprehensive crease pinched his brow; he lunged once more and pinned the runaway volume under his palm. The doors parted, yet the nearer panel halted halfway. He nudged with a shoulder, earned only a metallic groan, then shifted the crate so its weight pressed forward. A second push coaxed the panel wide enough for entry, and the crate scraped over the threshold.
Inside, fluorescent tubes hummed above metal shelves that rose like cliffs. Lewis set the crate on a trolley and lifted the top layer of books, ready to shelve them alphabetically. A slim notebook peeked from beneath a folded atlas. Curiosity lifted his fingertips; he shifted bindings to delve deeper and found an ink drawing of the old observatory dome, notes cramped around the margins. Behind him, the trolley wheels clicked as an archivist arrived, drawn by the noise, and carefully placed the notebook onto a separate tray. Overhead, ventilation fans exhaled; outside the high window, cranes beyond the river stood against pale sky.
