Sam woke early because the music fair started at noon.

He planned one goal: share fresh muffins with every visitor.

He used morning light to prepare the batter.

Ample flour, eggs, and milk filled a bright blue bowl.

His spoon moved with steady cadence around the mixture.

The oven warmed beside him and made a soft hum.

A small ball rolled from the hallway into the kitchen.

It bumped the bowl, and batter splashed onto the timer.

The wet timer slipped, kicked the power switch, and lights blinked.

The sudden darkness stopped Sam for only one breath.

He grabbed clean tins and split the batter into them.

Smaller tins could bake faster, even inside cooling heat.

He pushed them inside before warmth faded completely.

The power returned, and yellow coils glowed again.

Golden tops rose; sweet air drifted through the room.

He packed the muffins and hurried downtown with a grin.

A drummer sampled one muffin, then waved Sam toward the stage.

During the final song, Sam tapped a triangle beside him.

The last note rang, and Sam lowered the silver beater.
