Mila has spent the morning in the school gym, linking plastic tubes into a winding marble network that covers half the floor. Several tubes have been taped together at moderate angles so the marble can keep moving but never rush too fast. The final bell, which hangs at ankle height, waits silently near the exit door. Children weave around the structure, and sneakers slide close to the fragile corners. When a ball bounces nearby, one elbow knocks a central tube loose. Mila kneels, presses fresh tape, and sends a test marble. It drops, flips sideways, and vanishes through a narrow gap beneath the stage curtain.

Dust rises as she crawls after the lost piece, forced to venture into the unknown darkness under the platform. Sunlight that slips through the floorboards infuses the space with thin golden lines. While searching, her fingers touch a small metal coin that has been resting there for years. The coin, heavier than the marble, gives her an idea. She returns, replaces the missing tube with a shorter one, and sets the coin at the new starting point of her venture. Judges have already entered the gym, clipping notes. The coin rolls, strikes each corner cleanly, travels the last descent, and taps the tiny bell. The clear ring floats above the quiet tubes.
