Lina balanced a shoebox volcano on a rolling cart. Her goal sounded simple: reach Room Twelve before the judging bell. The corridor, however, filled fast with buzzing youth leaving the gym, while a cold draft from an open side door pushed against her poster board. The cart swayed; a jar of colored vinegar rattled inside. Lina has spent three afternoons wiring a tiny bulb that would glow when the liquid touched the battery. The positive wire, which crossed the crater, now trembled above the foam rocks. It had been glued in place earlier, yet the glue looked thin. She tucked her elbows in, but the crowd pressed closer and the draft grew sharper.

A sudden bump threw the front wheel sideways, and the cart stalled. The janitor paused nearby, and Lina dipped her head in brief respect before bending toward the jam. Instead, she lowered the poster board to the floor, slid it under the stuck wheel, and leaned. The board worked like a ramp; the cart rolled again and slipped through a narrow gap beside the lockers. The quick slide gave the cart more speed. That speed, an unexpected benefit, carried it past the lockers. A final swirl of air splashed vinegar over the battery. Awareness rippled along the hallway as the bulb flashed bright red. Gasps rose, then laughter followed the tiny eruption of foam down the volcano’s slope. The bell rang exactly then, and Lina parked beside Room Twelve, hands steady on the cart.
