If the seeds had been planted last week, they might have sprouted before the next school break. Persistent spring storms had kept him indoors since the previous Monday afternoon. Soon after the clouds finally drifted away, he cycled here, determined to prepare one neat bed before dusk spread over the sheds.

He knelt beside the tool shed, hunting for a spade, but the metal door refused to open. The latch had been warped by rain, and each tug only rattled rusty bolts against the frame. He fetched a thin twig to pry at the catch; splinters scraped his palm, yet the door still held. While he searched for another idea, loose soil near his shoe shifted. A gopher popped up from an underground burrow, blinking under the sun as if surprised by company. Milo jerked back, losing balance, and the twig flew into weeds.
