English 원문
Luis had long carried a quiet wanderlust, yet every map in his room pointed only to the crowded city zoo. Rumor said a forgotten glass dome behind the aviary still guarded a mechanical toucan designed by an artist decades earlier. The bird, no larger than a miniature lamp, supposedly perched on a time capsule that clicked open once a year. Luis had been sketching exotic shapes for class, and a moving metal beak would finish his project. By dawn he crossed the service yard; loose gravel shifted under his sneakers while morning light slid across grey walls.
The first gate had been welded shut during renovations, so he followed a side corridor where pipes rattled above his head. A padlock snagged his sleeve; he tugged free, only to find the corridor ending in tangled hoses. If he had arrived earlier, the main doorway would have been clear, yet now dust hovered like fog. He ducked beneath the hoses, pushed a pane that wobbled, and squeezed inside the dome. Warm air settled around him, carrying the earthy scent of a single sprout rising through cracked tiles. Sunlight refracted through the glass, but no bright feathers moved among the broken planters.
He circled the fountains twice, yet the dome stayed silent except for dripping water near a cracked gutter. When a loose vine brushed his shoulder, he stepped back and the support pole clanged against vertical rails. The vibration tipped a dusty shelf, several gears rolled off, and one struck a stone pedestal beside him. A faint click followed, and the pedestal’s cap slid aside, revealing the promised capsule hidden beneath chipped marble. Inside, the miniature toucan waited, gears silent, wings folded tight like sleeping petals. Luis lifted it; brass feathers caught the light and the beak snapped open, scattering tiny cogs like seeds across the tile. Outside, distant traffic murmured, yet inside the dome the motionless brass bird rested atop the open capsule.
