Mila has promised to bring a single, delicate tulip to her friend who has just moved across town. The stem has been wrapped in a strip of paper that once held sandwiches, yet the petals still tremble beside the morning traffic. She reaches the main avenue where a crosswalk stretches between two streams of cars that refuse to rest. The countdown light shows eight seconds; her shoes tap, the paper shifts, and a gust that has already pushed empty cups along the curb catches her hair. She waits, deciding that steady breathing, not speed, will guard the flower once the signal changes.

The walk sign blinks. Halfway across, a bicycle whirs from the side street, its bell ringing too late. Air swirls behind the wheels; the tulip slips free, skidding across the painted lines. Mila lunges, but the rider’s rear basket scoops the stem and carries it three metres forward before stopping in surprise. She jogs, retrieves the bloom, and notices a crack along the paper. A second gust approaches, so she slides the flower inside an empty plastic bottle that has rolled near the curb. The improvised technique locks the petals in place. Five minutes later she reaches the brick doorway; the rescued tulip rests against the bell as her fingers lift away.
