Milo kneeled on the shaky dock beside the slow spring river. Tomorrow the broad lawn on the island would hold a family gathering, and cleaning the small rowboat before dusk had become a quiet family gathering tradition. Pale sunlight mixed with the smell of damp pine drifting over the water. The boat, painted green long ago, has rested all winter against a piling, and his grandfather would take pride in seeing the faded letters still clear along the bow. Milo tugged the rope that should slide around a worn post, yet a hidden snag under the water stopped every inch. Wind from upstream pressed the bow toward him, while the current pushed the stern away; those competing forces locked the line tight. He braced both boots, pulled again, and the rope refused to move.

While catching breath, Milo noticed the stern bobbing; the current still had strength. Because the snag lay on the far side of the post, that same water might undo the knot if the wind no longer helped the post grip. He pushed the bow outward with an oar. The current took hold, pulling downstream, and the rope whipped free, circling the post once before sliding loose. The sudden release sent the free end across the open shed door. It struck a shelf where three glazed plates, each showing parts of family history, balanced in a row. Two plates tipped into a wicker basket; a dull clink rose, and one rim cracked. Milo guided the boat alongside the dock and tied a fresh knot. He slid the last coil of rope into the bucket.
