Lily finished class early and planned a hospital visit. Her uncle stayed there as a patient after a small fall. During her lunch break she carried a green plant for him. She boarded bus number six near the river station. A clear bus lane ran beside heavy midday traffic. Road workers moved cones and blocked the lane without warning. The driver braked hard and bags slid across the floor. Lily’s plant tipped, and dark soil scattered over her shoes.

She knelt quickly and scooped the soil with a paper cup. A nearby boy offered tissues; she thanked him and continued. The blocked bus lane slowed every stop, so Lily left early. She walked the final block under bright trees and calm wind. At the hospital lobby, an elevator opened after a short wait. Her uncle read a magazine when she entered his room. He greeted her, and loose soil rolled off the plastic pot. She set the plant on the table.
