English 원문
Nelda adjusted the lens cap while the little research boat drifted near the rocky shoreline. She had spent two months following reports of a rare migratory tern flock, and today the last window of opportunity hovered above the waves. Every bolt had been inspected by the harbour mechanic earlier that week, yet the vessel still groaned as spray crossed its salt-streaked deck. The motor coughed, then fell silent, so she dropped the anchor to keep position. If Nelda had known the fog would thicken, she would have anchored closer. Instead, a pale curtain rolled in and buried the distant cliffs.
Nelda lifted the camera, but the lens clouded at once. She wiped it on her sleeve; moisture returned before she finished. A sudden jerk rocked the bow— the anchor rope had twisted itself around a floating branch, forming a stubborn knot. Her elbows bumped the rail as she leaned forward to untangle the mess, yet the branch only spun and tightened the loop. Time slid away with the tide. She wished she had carried a spare line, though the thought faded when wingbeats brushed the air somewhere overhead. The fog swallowed the sound before she could locate its source.
The fog thinned without warning, pulled aside by a brisk gust racing along the water. Nelda steadied herself and expected to see the terns on distant rocks, yet the shoreline remained empty. A quick rustle came from behind. She turned and froze; dozens of small white shapes dotted the railings. The flock had landed on the boat itself, pecking at barnacles as if the vessel were a floating pier. Their arrival shifted the boat’s weight, loosening the rope and sliding the branch free. Nelda raised the camera; shutters clicked in rapid bursts. Sunlight rested on the bright wings scattered across the quiet deck.
